Taka maki-e technique is applied, in which after the urushi coating is applied over and over again, the proper powders are chosen out of several dozen types of gold and silver powders that are then sprinkled over the raised section. It provides a splendid image of the waterfall running through the valley with depth.

The depiction of a waterfall in a mountain gorge is a common theme in Japanese art – the motif suggests the transient, ever-changing impermanence of the flowing water in contrast to the solid changelessness of the rocky mountain surface. The motif is realized here in painstaking Taka Maki-e technique with ample use of gold dust and other precious materials.
