Dreh Griffel: a clever wordmark that incorporates a play on words. The design of the ‘Drehgriffel’ wordmark draws inspiration from ‘Stterlin,’ a German lettering style developed in the 1920s for handwriting instruction. The intentional juxtaposition of the wordmark’s old-fashioned German style creates an engaging contrast with the modern design. The compound German word ‘Drehgriffel’ combines two elements: ‘Dreh’ (referring to the innovative twist mechanism) and ‘Griffel’ (a reference to the ancient Greek writing tool, the ‘grapheion’). This combination clearly reflects the deep roots of LEUCHTTURM1917, a traditional German company. It is not a coincidence that the birth of the Drehgriffel and the establishment of Leuchtturm Album Publishing House both trace back to the 1920s.
