Boxed Washi Paper Scroll, Unryu (Textured)

These gorgeous, gift-boxed scrolls of washi paper are made in Japan using local materials and traditional papermaking techniques. Measuring 7.4″ tall and more than 350″ long, each roll has an enormous amount of fine paper. It’s wrapped in a protective sheet, then packed in a washi-covered paper box.

This scroll is made from unryu, a textured washi paper with lots of fiber inclusions. This paper tells the story of how it’s made: natural fibers are pressed together with water and very minimal additives, then dried on screens and cut to size.

We used our test scroll of unryu washi for a little collage project first, we dipped the absorbent washi in watercolor; then we adhered the still-wet strips to a backing sheet. That’s just one mixed media idea for this paper, which can also accept many drawing media, including pencils, brush pens, and sumi ink.
